We’ve written in the past about the dangers of falls in the workplace. Falling from heights is one of the most common causes of injuries and deaths at work sites.
If nobody sees you fall the situation can become dire quickly. You could be seriously injured with valuable time ticking away to get medical attention. This is just one of the concerns when it comes to falling from ladders or other heights.
KSTP reports of a recent example of one of these falls. A worker at a malting plant fell into a grain bin. The coworker who found him called 911 immediately, but authorities were unsure of how long the individual had been in the bin before he was found. In cases where someone else finds the victim but didn’t see the fall, there is no way of knowing how long the individual was trapped without assistance.
Given the dangers of falling, it is important for everyone to be aware. You should make sure there are others around whenever possible when working high up. It may not be possible to have a dedicated spotter, but if others know where you are, it is more likely they will be able to respond to a fall.
Similarly, be aware if you know a coworker is in a spot where a fall would be dangerous. Even if you aren’t the one in danger, you could be the one who helps save someone else’s life.
Working in a safe environment means everyone needs to pay attention and be aware of the dangers around them.
